Feline Identity Theft

This is not about mom and Russ, rather this is a story about their cats and more specifically their cat Max.

I will start from the beginning, as I have found this is usually the best place to begin when one tells a story such as this one.
Mom and Russ have 2 cats. Rocky and Max.
When they go out of town Rocky and Max are fed by a neighbor, Brenna. Brenna feeds the cats in the garage, and the garage door is cracked open just enough for the kitties to crawl under so they can go outside. Inside the garage they have the nice attic space with warm beds for sleeping. It's a set-up that any cat would love.
A few weeks ago a new cat moved in, a Tom Cat who is orange in color, very similar to Max. Mom said this cat was friendly with her, well groomed, and preferred to sit on the door mat at the back door.
Just upon leaving for Baltimore all three cats were found to be in a sort of "stand off." A slight scuffle.
Russ wanted to trap the Tom Cat, mom disagreed, and so Russ left the cat alone.

Fast forward to Monday when Devin, the kids and I  go to their house to check on the bees.
When we pulled up the drive an orange cat appeared out of the cracked garage door and took off running to the woods.
"Oh, my! That is the tom cat!" I said. We all watched as Dolly chased him into the woods.
We opened the garage doors so the little ones could play with toys that are stored in there, and this is when Journee comes to me and says,"Mom, Max looks hurt."
I went to the garage and sure enough, Max was sitting on the steps and he looked terrible. His fur was matted and his ears were scratched up, and he seemed sore when I picked him up.
"I bet that tom cat beat him up!" I exclaimed.
Disclosure* I am not always the "brightest" crayon in the box*
I called mom and Russ and told them about how poor Max had been in a cat fight and that Rocky was nowhere around and that I would take Max home and take him to the vet.
We wrapped him in a towel and took him home. The poor kitty slept the whole way home and after he got home I placed him on my bed and he continued to sleep several hours. That night he ate, and ate, and ate, and drank water and used the litter. I noted how strong the urine smell was and decided he had been dehydrated, causing concentrated urine. The next morning I told mom and Russ how well he was and that a vet visit was not needed, and that Max was living a life of luxury in my room and sleeping all day on my bed. He is such a sweet cat! All day the girls would come in and love on him, "Poor Max!" they would all say.
Devin went back to their house and set a trap to "catch" that Tom cat.
Again, Max ate and drank all night, and when I called him he would jump onto my bed and sleep on my legs.

This morning I get a call from mom. "Sam, Brenna just called and she went to feed the cats this morning and says that Rocky is in the trap and that Max is in the garage."
What????? (I am thinking to  myself)
Mom continues," Could you email a picture of the cat you have at your house, I think it's the Tom Cat."

Could this be an imposter? Is this a case of identity theft?
I emailed a picture, but in the meantime came up with the brilliant idea of actually "checking" to see if this is a neutered cat (as Max is neutured) or a true tom cat.

Eee, eee, eeee, eee ,eee (Imagine the music from the movie Psycho)
Tom cat, you have the right to remain silent. You are being charged with identity theft, as all evidence proves you are NOT the neutured cat named Max. You are being punished with a rabies vaccine and a low cost neuter at the local vet office, whereby you will then be subject to a life of leisure here along with the kazillion of other animals I own. Please note that you will become an outdoor cat once your procedure has been completed.
I am grateful to have been the judge and jury, otherwise I might have been charged with aiding and embedding a criminal:-)

We drove to mom's and released Rocky, the tom cat issue is solved at their house, and my girls are excited to own another pet. They also named the guy.
His name is, Max.
Although his nickname is Crook Shank.

Out and About

Today Russ saw his doctor and everything looks pretty good. They are watching his blood count ,as it was slightly low, but otherwise he's in good shape. He was instructed to EAT,EAT,EAT this week. He needs to pack on some pounds!
It's ironic that he has spent all these many years watching his weight and what he eats only to have to do the exact opposite now.

When I spoke with them this afternoon they were out and about, driving around town, and seeing what the harbor looks like.
We went to their house today to feed the bees and get some mail, and the kids were very happy to see snow!

The bees were very happy to get outside for some fresh air, although only a few were able to actually leave the hive. All of the hives were alive and some were amazingly HUGE! (jumping up and down with excitement)
Russ and I will be busy harvesting honey and preventing swarms this summer:-)
I will update later this week.
Thanks for stopping by to check in.

Better Today

Russ is feeling better today and was able to eat lunch and dinner. He is still getting some antibiotics but his fever is down today, so all good news.
Mom was told he would be released tomorrow morning, then he has an appointment Monday morning with Dr. Herman. I will update accordingly.

They are also getting snow in Baltimore.
We have enjoyed it but are now gearing up for Spring. Last year Russ taught the girls how to shoot a recurve bow and they are excited to shoot some more with him when the weather is nice.
Enjoy your weekend everyone and check back Monday.

Treatment Postponed

Today the problem and source of infection was determined to be the stent in his bile duct, as suspected.
They went in and removed the plastic stent and replaced it with a metal one, as it seems the plastic one was pushed out of place causing infection and elevated bilirubin levels.
Tonight Russ remains in the hospital on antibiotics and a diet of ice chips only, as they want to give his GI system time to heal up. Most likely he will remain hospitalized until Sunday.
He has an appointment with the main doctor, Dr. Herman, Monday morning to discuss the next step. It is all but certain that his chemo and radiation treatments will be post-poned another week, until the 8th.
I will update this weekend, but we are praying he recovers quickly and feels better tomorrow.
Thanks for checking in on him.

Sick and Tired, Literally

Today Russ has not been feeling well, shaking, shivering and feverish. An appointment had been scheduled today with his main doctor, thankfully.
The diagnosis, after recording a temperature of 102, is an infection. The source is unknown but the doctor thinks perhaps it is coming from the stent in his bile duct.
As of an hour ago they were waiting for a room so Russ can get started on antibiotics. Blood has already been drawn for cultures, although the results will not be back for about 24 hours.
Initially they were going to admit through the ER, so mom and Russ went to the ER. Now, this hospital is in downtown Baltimore and in what you would consider a "lively" part of town. Mom said the time spent in the ER was, "a trip!" It's nice to see they still have their humor and wits about them.
At any rate, they were able to leave the ER and go straight to admitting.
It's important to clear this up or else they will have to postpone the chemo treatments that start Monday. I will post updates as they become available.

Mom and Russ are settled in. Russ had his biopsy yesterday and some blood work. They are staying in a comfortable apartment (I think Sami already went over that) and now they are just gearing up for the long haul.

Please keep in touch with them!

So Begins the Next 4 Weeks

Mom and Russ made it to Baltimore today. The weather was cold and rainy, which would make the roadtrip seem even longer, I am sure.
Tomorrow he must get another go at obtaining a biopsy, and hopefully no more errors will be made. Although doctors are only human and are quite capable of making mistakes, it has made the whole process very frustrating for Russ and mom both. I will update on how the procedure goes.
Friday he is scheduled to get another test done in radiation. I believe this is a standard test they perform so that they may give him the radiation treatments properly.
Because they had 2 procedures scheduled this week they have decided to stay up there for the entire time. This will add a 4th week to their planned 3 week visit. He will begin chemo and radiation on Monday of next week for 3 weeks.
Thankfully, they were able to secure an apartment rental, so mom brought some quilt material to sew and hopefully pass some time.
The weather never did get nice enough to inspect hives on Friday, so it will have to wait until a nice day does happen. I plan to go up weekly and check on things such as the bees, and I expect Russ's hives will thrive this spring. We both hope to get LOTS of honey.
Thanks for stopping by to check in and I will update this week!
Sam:-)
